What really is there to say, at this point, that hasn’t been said already.
I could go into all sorts of analysis. How healing it will be for Trump to be gone. The catharsis of repudiating him, albeit not nearly as heavily as we would have all liked to see. The mess of legal battles ahead as the Trump administration tries to crush democracy. The fact we just elected a Black woman as VP. How fucked up it is that it took our country hundreds of years to elect our first woman, and only our second person of the global majority. The deep sadness of Trump’s biggest loyalists being re-elected to their roles. The prospect of a R Senate stopping Biden reforms in their tracks. The vote that progressives delivered. The votes from progressives that were missed due to the DNC’s devotion to moderate/center. Covid cases rising fast, and deaths are sure to follow. This could go on for a long time. But, for once, no. Not today. The tears I shed this morning were for many reasons, most of which dealt with the challenges that lie ahead. But they were also tears of happiness for the giant step that mankind has taken back toward civility.
Today is about this step. This step toward caring for one another again. Toward the greater good, toward democracy. Even for those of us who desire stronger progressive change, this is a crucial step toward that.
Today is about gratitude. For all the people who made this happen. Because apparently, if each one of you didn’t get out there and GOTV, the dictator would have been re-elected, and our country would have been lost. I don’t say that lightly. This country was almost lost. And like it or lump it, given its position in the world, the effects would have been staggering.
That said it still might be lost. There’s so, so much work to do. And so many issues to address. And
But not today. Today we celebrate that step back toward what we know is right. Today we thank one another for all that we contribute. Today, we come together. Tomorrow, we get to work.
